African Okuyi helmet mask - PUNU - Gabon

Very beautiful feminine PUNU helmet mask. With a typical finely worked hairdress and a very nice face. This mask is decorated with a lot of kauri shells and has a 'helmet' of grassy fibers covered with painted canvas. A strand of colored beads along the face.
The faded white and red earth tones give this mask a very serene look.

A PUNU mask embodies the close connection between the world of the living and the dead in African beliefs. They are mostly feminine in nature.
The number and position of the scarifications varies per style or ethnic group. These distinctive signs, called mabinda, were made in children around the age of ten to fourteen.

Overall good condition, possible traces of use. Take a good look at the pictures.
