 African Fetish BYERI Relic figure, FANG tribe, Gabon

Called Byeri or Bieri, figures like these were guardians of the enshrined relics of important ancestors. Sitting on top of or nearby of the containers with the bones of the ancestors. They were also consulted for aid and protection. They are notable for their child-like proportions contrasted with a muscular, poised vigilance.

The statue is fully covered with brass plates. With on the stomac hammered tribal figurations.

Good condition, but this statue shows some usual wear and tear, see pictures.

Depth: 4.33 inch, 11 cm

Approximate Age: 3rd quarter 20th century.
